Frequently
Asked Questions
Q:
How much will my braces cost?
A:
Like so many other treatments, it depends on your particular
problem. Sometimes there is more than one option and
you will need to enter into the decision making. Once
you and Dr. Zapalac make that decision a total fee for all
of your treatment will be determined. The usual method
of payment is a down payment plus monthly payments over the
time of active tooth movement. We are able to offer
payment plans, without interest, for the vast majority of
our patients.
Q:
My child is only 8. Is it too early to start treatment?
A:
The ideal time for your child's first orthodontic exam is
age 7. Timing of treatment depends on the jaw relationship, jaw
size and tooth size of your child. Some jaw growth discrepancies
and severe crowding are best treated at this early age.
However, Dr. Zapalac often recommends waiting to start orthodontic
treatment until most permanent teeth have developed.
He does not start any "early" treatment unless the
benefits are obvious.
Q:
Why do I need to see an orthodontist (instead of my regular
dentist) for straightening teeth?
A:
Orthodontists are dentists who have done at least two extra
years of residency training in orthodontics alone. They
have specialized experience and skills that apply to jaw growth,
jaw and facial cosmetics, TMJ disorders, and lifetime health
of the teeth as they relate to all the above. They are
often members of orthodontic specialty associations.
Dr. Zapalac is a member of the American
Association of Orthodontists and a Diplomate of the American
Board of Orthodontics
Q:
Do braces hurt?
A:
There will be two kinds of irritation or soreness when you
first get your braces. Your lips and cheeks will be
sore until your mouth adjusts. You will notice a significant
difference in a week or less. The teeth will feel tender
and occasionally when eating, although this varies considerably
among patients. Some patients never have any tooth soreness.
Some patients will benefit from over the counter medicines
such as Aleve,Advil or Tylenol for the first day or two after
an adjustment.
Q:
How long will I wear braces?
A:
The average time in braces is 21 to 28 months. However,
many problems can
be treated in a year or less.
Q:
Can I wear INVISALIGN instead of braces?
A:
Almost all adults and older teenagers are candidates for having
at least some
of their treatment done with Invisalign. Some adults,
whose problems are not as severe, can even have their entire
treatment done with Invisalign. Dr. Zapalac
can answer this question for you at the first Appointment.
Q:
Do braces "cure" TMJ problems?
A:
There are many reasons for TMJ problems (jaw clicking,
popping, soreness, difficulty in chewing, etc.) Crooked
teeth, clenching or grinding of teeth, stress, previous jaw
or face injury, old fillings, can all contribute to TMJ problems.
For many patients straightening the teeth will eliminate some,
if not all, of TMJ symptoms.
